Ever feel out of breath after a few throws or in a V? It might not be your fitness — it’s your breathing! Let’s fix that.
Learn to Breathe Properly
Many of us breathe from the top of our chest, using only about 10% of our lung capacity. This means less oxygen and quicker fatigue. We need to start breathing deeply, from the bottom of our lungs.
Here’s how: pull the air all the way down into your stomach. When you breathe, fill your lungs completely and get more oxygen into your body. More oxygen means you can train harder and longer.
This is crucial for our Brighton Jiu Jitsu Fitness Challenge, especially when switching from exercises like burpees to running. Take control of your breathing for a faster time.
Take a walk, put your hand on your stomach, and focus on breathing deeply. Try this when you’re training and you’ll notice improved performance in not only your Jiu Jitsu but your running too.
Don’t Hold Your Breath When Training
Holding your breath during training can be a major mistake. It increases the pressure inside your chest and abdomen, which can limit the amount of blood flowing back to your heart. This means your muscles get less oxygen, leading to quicker fatigue and decreased performance. Plus, holding your breath can cause dizziness and even fainting, which is the last thing you need during intense training sessions.
Make sure to maintain a steady and controlled breathing pattern. This helps keep your oxygen levels up and your energy steady, so you can perform at your best.
